What is it?

A birth doula is a trained labor support person who provides emotional and physical support to a laboring woman and her partner. The Doula is present at the mother's side throughout the entire labour, as she is there to offer any support possible.  Whether it be through massage, breathing techniques, positioning visualization, or simply a supportive word; a doula is there to make labour and delivery the most positive and enjoyable experience for the parents to be.

Doulas are quite often present with births involving a midwife, however, should not be confused with such, as the doula is there for support of the mother and father to be. The doula will assist in the delivery only through comforting measures while at the mother's side.

With the numbers ever increasing with women having doulas present during labour, these recent statistics have been shown bywomen supported by a doula during labor.

- 50% reduction of cesarean rate - 25% shorter labor
- 60% reduction in epidural requests - 30% reduction in analgesia use
- 40% reduction in forceps delivery

It is quite incredible what our bodies are capable of doing when given optimal surroundings and support available. If you are looking for a doula yourself, or know anyone who might be interested, please feel free ask Robin to answer any questions you may have on the subject.
